Protective Services

We are responsible for the care and protection of abused, neglected, and dependent children. Through our services, we strive to teach, assist, and enable families to build a strong foundation for their future and for their safety. We believe that the best place for a child is with their family as long as the child is safe. If a child is not safe, we work with the family to address barriers in order to ensure safety of the child. Our hope is that by providing services and overcoming barriers, families become stronger and remain intact.

Our job is keeping people safe.

Confidential Reporting

Child abuse and neglect cases are confidential by law. The law does not allow MCCPS to provide the name of the person who made the report of child abuse or neglect. Reporter information will only be released to authorized parties (including but not limited to ODJFS staff, law enforcement, county prosecutor and PSCA staff).

Wellness Checks

Children Services cannot complete a well check on a child without specific allegations of abuse and neglect. The State of Ohio provides guidelines that must be met before Children Services can initiate an investigation.  Law Enforcement agencies can conduct a well-child check.  You could call your local law enforcement for assistance.

Reporting Abuse and Neglect

It is best to have as much information as possible when reporting abuse and neglect.

  • Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all involved parties

  • Approximate age or DOB of the child and their level of functioning or behavior

  • When and where the alleged abuse/neglect occurred.

  • Type and extent of abuse and current condition of the child

  • How the child is currently at risk of abuse/neglect

  • Circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse/neglect

Reports can be made in person at Morgan County Childrens Services during office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. You may also call (740) 962-3838 during normal business hours.  For emergency intakes after hours and on weekends, contact the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department at (740) 962-4044 or dial 911 for emergency situations involving children.

  • INVESTIGATION SERVICES

Mogan County Children Services investigates reports of neglect, dependency, and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse of children. We work closely with other agencies, law enforcement, and the courts to assess the risk and safety of these children. Additionally, our agency investigates allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of people over age 60.

  • FOSTER CARE

Children Services provides care and safety for children who are unable to be kept safe in their homes due to abuse, neglect, dependency, or unruliness, which jeopardizes their safety. Children in the custody of the agency are placed in relative/kinship/foster placements, while other children may need therapeutic and secure placement in residential treatment facilities. These facilities are highly skilled, intensive treatment providers that address psychological and/or behavioral problems due to exposure to child abuse.

  • ADOPTION SERVICES

The Children Services Unit provides care to children who are unable to be safely reunited with their families. These children are placed in the agency's permanent custody. It then becomes our responsibility to recruit and find safe, loving, permanent families for these children.

  • ONGOING SERVICES

Morgan County Children Services provides ongoing services to families and their children on a voluntary or court-ordered basis to help reduce the risk of abuse and neglect to the child or children with the goal of keeping families together whenever possible. The caseworker works with the family and community resources to strengthen the family and ensure the children are safe and their needs are met within their home.
